here's a five-minute review:

| Chapter 8 describes the sed utility and how it’s used by your
| autoconf-generated configure script to generate a Makefile from a
| Makefile.in template. In addition, I’ll show you how you can use the
| same technique to extend your own Makefiles (and your automake
| Makefile.am files).

Good thing you haven't written that chapter yet.  Autoconf 2.62
will use awk instead of sed to transform *.in files, for speed.
