And now neither can I! Story is:

git pull
setenv PATH /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R7/bin:/usr/local/bin
to avoid using anything in /usr/pkg/bin
./configure
make
make check

Then I got the VPATH failure with something involving "w".

Eric's "run" command in VPATH testdir got me "skipped"

Now I repeated the make check procedure above with a make disclean before
the ./configure, and like you, get a "skipped".

Heisenbug it is :-/ Sorry for wasting your time...
