AM_PYTHON_PATH provides a pythondir that is hardcoded to ${prefix}/lib/.... Our project would prefer to place the python code elsewhere, say ${prefix}/scripts/....

Is there a way to refine the path through AM_PYTHON_PATH, or a configure command line option?
