Because it is better not to reinvent good code?
I reused the configure code generated by AC_LINK_IFELSE:

It should work well and be well integrated with the other checks, but it
uses internal $ac_ext and ac_fn_c_try_link, so we'll have to make sure
that it is still ok in the future, and probably reuse configure
generated code if it changes to much.
