I'd rather still report a suggested lzma "successor" here (and in the
new warning as well); we could maybe name both lzip and xz?

Agreed. Both lzip and xz are the most plausible replacements for lzma.


So, what about the attached, amended patch?

It seems good to me. But don't forget the "in" between "removed" and "the" here:

+  - The `lzma' compression format for distribution archives has been
+    deprecated in favor of `xz' and `lzip', and will be removed the
+    next major Automake release (1.12).
