Yikes, you're right, it does look broken.

Actually, I lie (*).  What I now have is this:

check: check-setup

.PHONY: check-setup
    <insert database setup here>

Seems to be working the way I want it now.

(*) Sorry, my posts to the list and the reality in my working
directory are a bit out of sync!
