Thanks Brian, that worked fine (as far as I can tell).  Its worth noting the 
tarball created the aclocal.m4 and subdirs files that were missing from the 
KDevelop one.

Ran it, didn't seem to have any problems.

Thanks for your help, I'll use make dist from now on (and a pox upon the 
Kdevelop publishing menu option! ;) ).
