Thank you so much. I totally missed ยง 15.2.1.

Almost! The problem is with the last rule you defined because a rule to
generate test-stop.log would have already been generated by Automake
and this would override it. I tested in my own source tree and
confirmed that:

   automake-1.16: warnings are treated as errors warning: user target '' defined here ...
   /usr/share/automake-1.16/am/ ... overrides Automake target 
'' defined here
   make: *** [Makefile:1156: ../] Error 1
