Please try to debug that a bit. Adding -vvvv makes it a lot more
verbose. What connection, serial or USB? In case of USB, please try
also a serial connection.
You could discuss that on the avrdude-dev list if you want. In case
you've got a clear picture of what's wrong, please write a bug report
for avrdude.
