These may be obvious, but this is what I'd check first:

I assume you have the 74HC573 installed?

Did you set up the MCUCR (MCU control register) as detailed in the
"Interface to External SRAM" section of the atmel 4414/8515 data sheet?

Also, the STK200 Starter Kit manual says you need 70ns SRAM or else you
will need to deal with wait states. Did you check this?

Those are just guesses of things to check. I haven't attempted this yet
with gcc, so I don't know what you'd do there, although I'm interested.
