You can read sram from gdb with the 'x/b addr' command, but you have to 
add 0x00800000 to addr. For example, to read from sram address 0x400:

  (gdb) x/b 0x800400

You should be able to set a value at an address like this:

  (gdb) set {unsigned char}0x800400 = 0xa5
