[avr-gcc-list] atmega16 not defined

from newbie:
I have debian with avr-gcc 3.2.
I would like to use a atmega16.
avr-gcc --target-help shows that atmega16 is a known mcu name. When I
try to compile with -mmcu=atmega16 I am told "device type not defined".
When I use -mmcu=atmega161 it's ok. In /usr/avr/include there is a
iom161.h and iom163.h but no iom16.h..
What can I do?
