[avr-gcc-list] TWI slave device addresses?

I'm using TWI (I2C) for the first time. I'm 
not clear on how slave addresses are assigned.
With only 256 possabilities it would seem that
collisions are possible. The device I am using
(X1226 RTC) has two addresses. Since the bus
can have multiple devices and those devices
addresses seem to be hardwired and so few
available addresses, is one required to manually
choose devices so as to avoid conflicts?
