I don't see what the fascination of having a "WinAVR for Un*x" is all about. The magic which makes WinAVR is that the Un*x tools can be run on Windows.

I have personally no problem build all the tools from sources on any of Linux or Windows and I do that (more or less) regularily.

The point was that some shops use Windows and Linux as development platforms. They need the exact same version of tools on both platforms. If binary releases of the toolchain are provided, it is useful (or even necessary for some) to have them *synchronized*.
