I dont use PonyProg. I use SP12 which has no GUI, only a command line. So setting the options is very different from Pony prog. But the symptoms indicate a disabling of the reset pin. Try to get hold of a parallel programmer, just to be sure.
If you cant, just move on with a new device - what I would do. Mega8535's are quite cheap , at least not worth spending a lot of time analysing a non working device.
