This might also be useful information too:

$ avr-gcc -v Reading specs from
/home/coop/local/bin/../lib/gcc/avr/3.4.3/specs Configured with:
./configure --disable-nls --target=avr --enable-languages=c
Thread model: single
gcc version 3.4.3

Have you tried a more recent version, such as 4.1.2? Or perhaps 4.2.1?
Otherwise we might be chasing an old bug...

Right. Don't go chasing this bug. The "real" question I want to ask is if there is a way to describe -O2 as -O plus additional flags? If so, what are the flags?
