Despite the fact that it gave you the message to send an email to this list, 
you really need to email Atmel at address@hidden about this message. You need 
to send a bug report to them.

But, my best guess is that there is a bug in their avr-libc, specifically with 
the startup code for the at90can128 device.

Yes, the patches for xmega support are pretty much the same as the latest 
release of WinAVR (20100110), but with more device support, which is fairly 
trivial.
