Hi Tim!  As David already indicated

1) get the latest binutils from
   for the arch you are working on

2) Unpack in your home dir with
   dpkg --fsys-tarfile ......deb | tar xf -

3) Set your shell environment as 

You should then be good to go.  Can do the same with the gmp package
if you want to configure GCL with --enable-dynsysgmp.
