Yes, I know that it can be extended. Unfortunately my use of M4 macros
is even more limited (sendmail hacking) than my shell scripting skills
which, as you can judge from the current configure script, are sorely
lacking.

I studied the GNU tools book for autoconf/automake and then tried to
use it but found it did not address anything useful. Your experience
may be otherwise.

I thought of trying to use the M4 macros for determining system
information but eventually gave up. There are many other areas of
Axiom where I can do useful work. Shell scripting isn't one of them.
