That is odd.  I was able to build Axiom following those instructions
(modulo the patch issue I reported earlier).  I checked out with write
permission, i.e. with --username=<sf-user-id>; I don't know whether
that makes a difference.

Bill and others identified the problems as being related to recursive
copy.  I'll be working for a solution to this problem.
