My own hunch is that the proper extension of a macro language ought to be a
functional language. A drawback with macro languages is that they give
impression of generality they do not have. So after a while, moving towards
more advanced programming, one gets stuck in complicated workarounds. This
is not how proper programming should be.

So from that perspective, the move seems right. But on the other hand, it
adds complexity to the whole Bison package. So perhaps one should not put
other developments on hold, awaiting it.
