I have tried to refactor these patches to work with the
new support for {…} for %define variables.  I failed.  I
already spent too much time trying to fix things up, so
I'm going to give up and install these patches as they were
originally.  Then, of course, new patches will migrate from
this original proposal to the updated syntax.
