Looks like you pinned the region. Unpin it in the Command menu.
However, you never should get a _region_.tex file for C-c C-l,
regardless of whether you used C-c C-r or C-c C-c for compilation.

I shut down GNU Emacs 23 and launched it again. It opened circ.tex automatically (desktop got saved with a closed/deleted circ.tex!) and the irregular behaviour with _region_.tex is back again ...

Here are the entries:

;; Buffer section -- buffers listed in same order as in buffer list:
        (desktop-create-buffer 206
          '(auto-fill-mode reftex-mode)
          '(nil nil)
'((indent-tabs-mode) (buffer-file-coding-system . iso-latin-9-unix) (TeX-master . "~/Quellen/auctex-11.81/preview/_region_")))
        (desktop-create-buffer 206
          '(auto-fill-mode reftex-mode)
          '(748 nil)
'((indent-tabs-mode) (buffer-file-coding-system . iso-latin-9-unix) (TeX-master . "~/Quellen/auctex-11.81/preview/_region_") (TeX-PDF-mode . t)))

I remember that on Monday I got asked for the TeX-master, which then was a completely different file (which has disappeared from this list as I wanted it to).
