I confirm that in 4.21/4.22 this problem does not occur!

Ok then I did the installation differently
I changed
# Where info files go.

# Where local lisp files go.

# Name of your emacs binary

Then run
make install.

However my problem persists. When starting xemacs and
opening a tex file the following error occurs:

File mode specification error: (error "Autoloading failed to
define function turn-on-reftex")

Running LaTeX-mode again everything is fine.
So it seems that running make does not generate the
necessary autoloads file.

In any case when (in the hopefully near future) we can
synchronise the xemacs pkg with reftex I have to solve that

And it is an odd problem because I do remember in the past I
sometimes tried out a non xemacs pkg reftex version and had
never the auto-load problem.

What I could try to do is to use the xemacs pkg skeleton and
try to generate my own private reftex-pkg but I would like
first to understand that problem!
