Thanx Stepan... 

I am trying to install gcc4.0.1, and for that i need to have some basic 
dependencies already installed on the machine. whatever i have now are 
some old version of the required programs, so was trying to upgrade. 

anyway, thanks a lot for suggestion. i will definitely ask to 
inuxfromscratch...
