Sorry for joining the conversation late; I just discovered my bug-autoconf list
subscription was having issues. I'm wondering if gnulib's 'extensions' module
does this already, or if we should fold it into autoconf.

Personally, I'd rather have one macro that enables as many platforms as
possible, rather than having to add a macro for every new platform. As in
AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS.
