_SOURCES bug in automake 1.8.5

I am working on a project with a friend who has automake 1.4 and I have
1.8.5.  He specified:

libvhiSc_la_SOURCES= \   hil.c \
   hwRtiSbProtocol.cpp \
   hwRtiBrstProtocol.cpp \   scil/scilHw.cpp \
   scil/scil.cpp \
   scil/scilRtiSb.cpp \   scil/scilBti.cpp \
   scil/scilRtiBrst.cpp

Which failed on my version of automake because it wanted all the scil/*.cpp
files in the current working directory, (automake 1.8.5 stripped the scil/
from the file names)
