Deciphering links

I had asked this previously on gnu.utils.help, and didn't get any ... help
that is.  So I thought I would try it here:

If I have a link, for example a -> b, how can find out the "b" part from a
script?  Right now I am using `ls -o $item | awk '{print $10}'`.  There
must be a more graceful way to do this.
