$'' isn't expanded within double quotes.

find's -name argument should be a shell pattern, not a regexp, thus
there should be no leading "^".

eval "letter=\$'\\$(printf %o "$[$number]")'"
find -type f -name "$letter*" -exec mv -f '{}' "./$letter" \;
