Still causing problem with
    echo ${x[*]: -1}

Try
    - len = array_max_index (a);        /* arrays index from 0 to n - 1 */ 
    + len = array_max_index (a) + 1;    /* arrays index from 0 to n - 1 */ 
few lines up.
