Works for me.

Neither you nor Antonio say what version of Bash or the OS.

I don't get an error and the output is correct.

I tried it in Bash 4.0.33(1)-release under Ubuntu 9.10 (using hd) and
Bash 3.2.49(23)-release under Cygwin 1.7.0 (using hexdump -C).
