 reproducible on mac os x 10.6.8
# uname -a
Darwin xxxx 10.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun  7 16:33:36
PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386 i386
# bash --version
GNU bash, version 4.3.24(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin10.8.0)

 Graham: could you please send the output of these commands:

# cat .bash_history | wc -l
# echo $HISTSIZE

 it obviously happens when you are almost at the level of
$HISTFILESIZE with `cat .bash_history | wc -l`.
