I didn't look at this in any detail yet, but if you don't want the
background ssh process to read from its stdin (which is the same as the
shell's stdin), you need to use -n:
-n Redirects stdin from /dev/null (actually, prevents reading from
stdin). This must be used when ssh is run in the background.
