Greg already pointed out that this doesn't work.

You can pick one of these instead:

    mapfile < "$file"; IFS= foo="${MAPFILE[*]}"; unset -v IFS

or

    mapfile < "$file"; printf -v foo %s "${MAPFILE[@]}"
