This sounds reminscent of a bug that was fixed in the 2.14->2.15 timeframe.
Could you try the 2.15 prerelease:
ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/binutils/snapshots/binutils-2.14.92.tar.bz2
and let us know if it fixes the problem?
FWIW, I've had no problems using 3.4.0, binutils 2.15 and CVS glibc
on mipsel-linux-gnu.
