I was unable to reproduce this problem.  I was using an older version of 
the cygwin DLL (1.4.1) which might be the reason, but I suspect that the 
real cure was the fact that I was using the most up to date version of 
the 2.15 sources from the branch in the binutils CVS repository.

Would it be possible for you to obtain a tarball of the current 
development binutils sources and try building gas and ld from that and 
then see if this version of the tools also has the problem ?
