The gprof that comes with binutils came from BSD originally and has
been adopted as a GNU package with work being done to it independently
of its ancestor. As you probably know, the `g' in gprof has nothing
to do with GNU. This is a common misunderstanding.
I don't know off-hand which gprof ships with OS X.
