Without the --gc-section option I get this error message:

  no memory region specified for loadable section `.eh_frame'

You can see our linker script in one of the console listings.  That has been 
used for years.  It wasn't until this migration/upgrade project, did we run 
into the above error and one other about .rela.dyn.
  
One of my many tests was to use the built in linker script which I adjusted 
slightly to our needs.  I can attach that if you wish.  It got the seg fault 
also, and if I remember correctly, I did not use the --gc-sections option with 
that script.
