This is a well known result, but it fortunately does not apply to
Bison. First of all, the concept of NFA and DFA does not apply
exactly the same way (one needs to stretch the concept of NFA quite a
lot to consider an LR(0) automaton is one), and most importantly, the
nature of a real world grammar makes it near impossible to fall into
the exponential case.

I'm sure someone can come up with one such grammar, indeed. But Bison
is dedicated to real world problems.

Which means, in other words, don't use Bison. Bison is dedicated to
producing O(n) parsers, hence without backtracking. It addresses
LALR(1) grammar as well as one can do. If you grammar does not lie
into LALR(1), don't use bison.
