bison-1.875: build feedback: DEC Alpha builds with native compilers

Subject: bison-1.875: build feedback: DEC Alpha builds with native compilers

The builds of bison-1.875 on HP/Compaq/DEC Alpha systems with OSF/1
4.0 and 5.1 and native compilers (c89 and cxx) passed all 104
validation tests.

The failures of test #34 (synclines.at) were with these compilers:

        Alpha GNU/Linux: gcc 2.95.3
        Alpha OSF/1 4.0: gcc 2.95.3
        Alpha OSF/1 5.1: gcc 2.9-gnupro-99r1

Despite many many attempts, I have yet to be able to build any
gcc-2.95.x or gcc-3.x release, up to and including 3.2.1
[19-Nov-2002], successfully on OSF/1 5.x. The local system management
on that system (outside my department) found a distribution somewhere,
but I don't know what the genesis of 2.9-gnupro-99r1 is, nor do I have
a source distribution for it.

With GNU gsl, which has a very large test suite, there is one test
failure that has now been traced to a gcc 2.95.x code-generation bug
on all Alpha platforms.

I therefore tried a gcc-3.0.1 development snapshot that succeeded on
OSF/1 4.0 on 19-Jul-2001, and got a build with all 104 tests passed.

Thus, bison-1.875 test failure #34 on Alphas may well be a gcc
problem.
