Unfortunately ls in coreutils 6.5 had a serious bug and would dereference a null pointer when listing a file when the number id or group id had no associated name. This warranted a new version 6.6 to be released. You can read the details of this particular problem here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-coreutils/2006-11/msg00153.html Unfortunately the latest news is so recently that the mailing list archive software has not processed the message yet. It runs periodically and has not swept through these lists yet. But in a short time the messages from the mailing list announcing this will be available here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/coreutils-announce/2006-11/threads.html And here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-coreutils/2006-11/threads.html Bob
