Consider upgrading - the latest stable version is 6.7 (although
for the case you mention, I don't think it will help much).

Join requires sorted input.  Depending on your locale,
your input files don't seem like they are sorted in default
order, therefore you can't expect anything from join because
you are violating its precondition.
