Thanks for the complete report and for running the expensive tests.
However, the version you are testing is coreutils-8.10,
which is now 7 months old (and that's pretty old, for coreutils).
There have been nearly 300 commits in coreutils and over 1200 commits
in gnulib since then (the test failure you found is in a gnulib test).
As you can see in the latest NEWS,

several bugs present in 8.10 have been fixed in 8.11 or 8.12.
I expect to release coreutils-8.13 in the next few days, so if you
could test the latest snapshot (from last week), that would be nice,
especially if any problem remains on Linux From Scratch:

it's a report against 8.10. If you can reproduce on 8.12 or newer,
