Sheesh.  Sorry.  That was bogus advice and would have no effect for you.
Please replace with this instead:

    if $gl_set_x_corrupts_stderr_; then
      warn_ "using SHELL=$SHELL with 'set -x' corrupts stderr"
    fi
    set -x
