Are your running a distribution (which?) or a DYI system?

This problem has been reported before; see
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/ddd/2001-November/001329.html which mentions
        Slackware 8.0
        autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.52
        automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p5
        gcc version 3.0.2

AFAICT, the problem is not with gcc as such (several ports of Debian
GNU/Linux use gcc 3 as their primary C++ compiler, yet I've not seen any
build daemon fail with a hang in configure), nor autoconf (Debian used the
same up until recently), nor automake.

For a proper diagnosis, I'd guess there is some additional information

- did you use the "configure" from the DDD tarball, or did you regenerate
- can you provide the "config.log", and a script(1) transcript of trying
        env CXX="g++ -v" CC="gcc -v" sh -x ./configure -v

> If I abort and try to build anway, I get the following:

Nothing wrong here. configure didn't finish, so all kinds of configuration
info is missing, and Makefiles haven't been generated from Makefile.ins, so
building fails.

LEADERSHIP A form of self-preservation exhibited by people with auto-
destructive imaginations in order to ensure that when it comes to the crunch
it'll be someone else's bones which go crack and not their own.
