Ddrescue have access to the drives trough the kernel. So you are right;
if the kernel does not fully recognize a drive, ddrescue can't read data
If you can't make linux to recognize the drive, perhaps you could try to
freeze it as David Burton suggests in the Freshmeat page for ddrescue.
