I agree with you that ed should set the "modified" flag in this case. 
Moe, for example, does set it. But AFAIK, ed has never set the 
"modified" flag in this case, (0.2 doesn't set it), and I would like to 
gather some user consensus about this before doing the change.

What do other users of ed think about this?
