the patch had been applied five years ago.

I can't see how distributing high-quality work for free and in a free 
format can be seen as a disservice to anybody.

On the contrary, I think you are the one doing a disservice to your 
users by stubbornly discriminating against the best format for the task 
of compressing tarballs.
