Working as designed.  Ed doesn't care about the content of the files it
operates on, and the only character it cares about is \n.  Sharp tools
cut, and if your text contains an EOU character, you have only yourself
to blame if your terminal explodes.  If you want something less universal
(and less primitive), use ex.
