spaces within the filenames are protected by correct quoting, for
example "$@".

Would that put double quotes around the entire argument list rather
than each item?
"$*" is "$1 $2 $3 ..."
"$@" is "$1" "$2" "$3" ...
Each argument is quoted individually.
